Masquerade

This is the other painting that I recently finished and have been trying to decide whether to enter it or the white on black one, I’m now calling “Oops.”

———————
The one below  is on watercolor paper–a full sheet size. I have tried looking at it in every possible direction and seem to like this the best. Looks like a Mask on a woman’s face. It was constructed in anger over the painting underneath that didn’t seem to be going anywhere, so coated it with multiple layers of acrylic paint and gesso and then the large gestural lines. The black areas were painted in later, as well as some of the red areas. I’m calling it Masquerade.

  1. The idea is very good but because it balances between figurative and abstract art, I would make much more clear choice which one you wanted it to be.

Now I see there a smiling mask and dark hand trying to cover it. The hand shape does not look hand enough, and there is contradiction between what looks like dark gloomy hand and joyful smiley mouth. It would look better if the whole thing would say: "Do not enter!"

  2. Interesting composition – I like it. I like the way the face peeks out, it looks friendly, as if the masking is simply a way of hiding a certain bashfulness.

Interesting comment Sami. Thank you. 🙂 I don't really see much that is figurative about it. The face shape is very distorted–especially at the top. And, there are just hints about a very distorted eye and ear.

Thanks Richard. 🙂 Well, as I mentioned in the post, it's purely accidental that there is any resemblance to a human face, as the gestural lines are somewhat an attempt to cover up what was underneath. (Which I don't remember what it was now, and I couldn't find any photographic record of it.) 😀

  4. Lot of good elements in this one, lines, contrasts, a mask with a dark and a light side, nice free style.

  5. Although I was so critical, this is still inspiring 😀

Well, my English is not good enough to explain 😮 The thing is that you see here a face, and probably many peeps also see a hand. For me it is then not abstract enough, and not figurative enough :p

  6. Thanks, Wertti. 🙂 No, personally I like abstract with a hint at realism that's enough that most everyone can see it.

  7. Should we devide art into abstract or figurative? I think the boarder is for everybody different 🙂

In other words it is not far enough to either end of the spectrum of
reality <——> abstract for your feeling.

Well, I can respect that opinion and I do agree that it's somewhere in the middle. 🙂

Do you think that because it's in color that influences your feelings as to how abstract it is?

More like opposite. If so called lips would be in some other color than red, and no little square as an eye, I would see this as "purely abstract" 😀

Of course not 🙂 And surely opinions are subjective and issue of personal taste

Hi Bhuiyan. Thank you for your comments. I'm not quite sure I know what you mean by it though. Are you asking what chance you have of doing art or becoming an artist? If so, you can do anything you put your mind to do! Some things take more work and time than others. 🙂

  11. Hi Merle,
I just came across your blog. I must say I am impressed by your work. Do keep painting and posting!

Thank you very much Alexandra. 🙂 I found out on Tuesday (15th) I had my third acceptance in the International Society of Experimental Artists, so now will will get my "letters" (ISEA) which I can use in my signature after the show opens in September 21.

I will have something to post soon–another piece I'm working on. 🙂
